Rockin’ and Ragin’, Snarlin’ and Screamin’, the Real Girls of Rock are Back With a Vengeance! The 2007 Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour Kicks Off In Washington, DC
"What do you get when you put a bunch of kick-a#$ rock chicks together with a sense of purpose? You get a better world –or at the very least a good step towards one—with one great soundtrack" StephenBailey.com
The 2007 Girls Rock & Girls Rule tour kicks off in Washington, DC on Saturday, Sept. 22, at DC-9. GRGR is well known for showcasing the best and hardest rockin’ femmes on the Indie scene. These real ladies of rock will storm the East Coast captivating audiences with their all out live performances and fantastic music!
The DC event features local favorites, Esmirelda & the Tidbits. Olivia & The Housemates and Project Applesauce. In addition, D.C. native Emiko is returning to her hometown to treat her fans to a rare performance, and longtime D.C. band Grandma's Mini, stars of 2002's sellout indie flick 'Washington Interns Gone Bad' will preview tracks from their upcoming CD, "What? Are We Not Charming?!" - another rare appearance! Joining them are GRGR touring bands all the way from NYC; G-spot, Loki the Grump, and RewBee. Show starts at 7:30pm and doors open at 7:00pm! GRGR is thrilled to be able to give back and support the next generation of girls who rock through their new partnership with Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls who will receive a portion of the proceeds. There will be a $10 tax-deductible donation which includes raffle tickets for cool prizes and giveaways from Rolling Rock, JVC, Lunabar and more!
For the past 5 years Girls Rock & Girls Rule has featured the best female rockers on the music scene and this year they continue their mission of creating awareness and exposure for independent female artists while helping women and girls in the community. This year’s tour is going to be bigger and better than ever when GRGR storms the Northeast featuring more then 35 bands and showcasing phenomenal performers groovin´ on everything from pop-rock, to punk, to metal to hardcore!
This year’s GRGR tour is hitting many more cities with artists who play harder than you could imagine. These girls like boys, they play with boys, but they are not “one of the boys” - each gal onstage is fierce, independent, and commands her band with passion and presence, playing songs of triumph, love, sex, politics, fun and freedom, bringing heart and their own unique viewpoint on whatever they happen to be singing about.
From Sept. 22 – Sept. 30, the GRGR Tour will travel from Washington, DC to DE, MD, PA, RI, MA and upstate NY, finally ending up back home in Brooklyn, NY (see full tour schedule below). Other bands appearing on the tour include Edible Red, InfernoPhonic, The Catholic Girls, The Rosies, All Out Riot, The Raygun Girls, Dormitory Effect, Semiblind, Soraia, Prima Donna, Odd Girl Out, The Degenerettes, Shooting Ropes, Spark is a Diamond, If Man is Five, Beyond Blonde, The Lydia Warren Band, Pasco Roberts, Covin, Sanity is Chaos, The Turnaround, Silence Bleeds, Cootie Shot, Cheap Perfume, Royal Pink (formed at Ladies Rock Camp) and Luff. In addition, there will be special guest appearances at select shows from Willie Mae Rock Camp camper bands.
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls was founded in 2004 and is a New York City-based non-profit summer day camp serving girls aged 8-18. The program offers girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform, learn about different types of music, and generally "rock out" in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, tolerance, and collaboration. The camp is named after Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, a blues and rock performer/songwriter who was one of the first women to play the music that came to be known as "rock n´ roll." The camp grew out of the Portland, Oregon-based program Rock n´ Roll Camp for Girls, which was founded in 2000. (www.williemaerockcamp.org)
In addition to the showcases, the Girls Rock & Girls Rule Documentary film is in post-production and scheduled for release in December 2007. It will premiere at the NYC 6th Anniversary showcase, but fans will have a chance to get a sneak peek at tour stops this fall.
Given the challenging state of the music industry, GRGR is on the cutting edge of the next trend in music bringing female rockers to the forefront today. The time has come for a platform that will bring attention to all the fantastic women who are making the kind of music people want to hear. These are not re-touched pop princesses or radio clones. They are unique, original and ready to show the world just how hard they can rock!
GRGR would not be possible without the help of sponsors, partners and contributors. GRGR thanks the following companies for their support of women and the independent music scene; Rolling Rock, Sam Ash, D’Addario, Jakprints, Gibson, Deepwave Studios, Bust Magazine, onlinegigs.com, JVC and Lunabar.
