Sanford: Should he stay or should he go?

News of South Carolina’s Governor Mark Sanford’s mysterious disappearance and extramarital affair now has many asking whether or not Sanford is still fit to retain the office of Governor. South Carolina Lt. Governor is on the record saying that the Governor should stay is office, although many wonder if the scandal will prove to distracting to allow the Sanford to continue the business of the State.

While many on the left are citing Sanford’s obvious hypocrisy, you may remember Sanford called for the resignation of Bill Clinton during the Lewinski affair scandal; there is another, much more disturbing side to this story.

When Sanford was first discovered missing, his staff reported that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. When it became clear that Sanford had been in Argentina, his staff attempted to lessen the severity of the news by stating that Sanford is very adventurous and often makes unannounced trips to other countries. And that’s when my radar went up.

I don’t know what the protocol is for members of our government when it comes to making trips abroad, but there seems to be something very wrong with one of our representatives making unknown trips to foreign countries without the knowledge of at least the State Department.

When has been Sanford been going? What does he do when he’s there and who is he meeting with? Does he meet with foreign leaders? Has he been meeting with business interests? What has he been doing? And how is it possible he has been making secret trips without the knowledge of the Federal government or even his State’s government.

And when it comes to the State of South Carolina, his mysterious absences pose another very important question. What if there had been an emergency? His staff doesn’t know where he is, and they have no way of reaching him. Nor had he left someone else in charge during his disappearances. What would have happened if he had actually been needed? What would South Carolina have done?

Should Sanford resign? Honestly, how can he stay in office? His behavior demonstrates negligence of the most gross fashion. How can he be trusted to handle the affairs of State when his own affairs obviously take precedence? Mark Sanford’s political career is over.
