The Mary Onettes - Islands By Brian Campbell |
| |
With this record, the Mary Onettes harkens back to one of the greatest periods of music ever, 1980’s British pop, and call to mind many of the eras best, like Depeche Mode, Bauhaus and dare it be said, the greatest band to have ever played, the Cure. Now, while the Mary Onettes clearly aren’t the Cure, and while it should be blasphemy to make the comparison, these guys utilize a lot of the same things the Cure made famous, most notable during the ‘High’ period in the early 90’s – lush vibrancies and rich, flourishing melodies. But to pigeonhole the band as simply revivalists would be criminal because the band flaunts modern day tendencies that would resemble Interpol and Heavens more than anything. Either way you look at it, this band is good, and good isn’t a strong enough word to describe ‘Islands.’
‘Islands’ is basically a ten track lullaby that at times is dizzying, and always abundant with gravity, such a sonic profusion, that it is hard to turn away. ‘Islands’ is the same as a good book, it’s a page turner. No track disappoints on the journey that is this record. It is rife with harmonious atmospherics and a track-like quality. It’s almost as if this record puts a spell on you it all starts with the vocals. The welcoming vocals, the magnetic lure is truly the fabric of the disc, and coupled with the captivating intensity that the rest of the band sets forth; the Mary Onettes are almost an unstoppable force.
‘Islands’ is easily one of the more special releases that has come down the pike in 2009.
