Enjoying the great outdoors and getting a little exercise is a favorite pastime for many people. The increased popularity of extreme style sports has made many outdoor activities more popular than ever, although they certainly have added a new twist to old favorites.
Among these Generation X outings, there are still an increasing number of places where you can enjoy simpler activities like hiking.
Growing in popularity, hiking into remote backwoods areas or simply taking to the trail in one of our many state park areas can be some of the most enjoyable time spent in the great outdoors. Of course, having the proper equipment and taking a few safety precautions can ensure the experience is positive. Whether you are a novice or an experienced hiker, take a few minutes to go over some basic safety practices.
Preparation
Getting ready to take to the trail should include a few safety precautions as well. One of the biggest mistakes a hiker can make is not studying a good map of the area they plan to hike. Not only is this important should you become disoriented, but it will show area boundaries and eliminate trespassing worries. You should plan your route carefully and don't forget to check the weather report before heading out so you can dress accordingly. Your hiking gear including boots, walking staffs and so on should match the conditions you expect to face on the trail. Before you leave, even if just for the day leave word with someone regarding your intended destination, and when you will return.
Outdoors
Once out hiking you should be aware of any regulations or guidelines and stay within marked boundaries for your own safety. Regardless of how long you expect to be gone or how easy the trail may be it is a good idea to drink plenty of water and high-energy snacks along the way. If your clothes become wet from rain or snow or sweat you should change them as the added moisture can chill your body. Keep spare socks in your pack and change them every few hours to help keep your feet energized and fresh. Never at any time drink water from a stream or pond, regardless of how fresh it may look. If you anticipate having to drink from these water sources bring a water purification system with you for that purpose.
While on the trail it is a good idea to know your limitations and respect the wilderness areas. Don't overexert yourself on the trail or push your limits and abilities. If an accident does occur try to treat it as best you can with a simple first aid kit. If you can, make it to the nearest trail, if not use a flare to signal help or simply call out to passersby. Above all lese, remain calm. Enjoying the outdoors with your friends and family this summer may find you on the trail before long. Be sure you have prepared well, and enjoy your time in the great outdoors. |
