Want Increased Success? Keep an Outdoor Journal

Sportsmen throughout the area know that the best way to realize more success in the field is to spend time in the outdoors. Regardless of whether your pursuit of choice is hunting or fishing, spending as much time as you can in the company of your quarry will inevitably make you a better hunter or fisherman.

While we all understand the importance of learning more about our favorite honey holes in the woods and on the streams, few of us take the time to put all of the information gathered to good use. This is where a hunting or fishing journal can come in very handy. Comparing notes from past seasons to the present conditions can help you determine when that big buck favors certain locations or when the first run of Great Lakes steelhead will enter your favorite tributary. Check out some of the guidelines we have compiled below to get the most from your journal.

Step One: The first step is to either purchase or make your journal. Regardless of your pursuit in the field and streams of the region, the best feature of any journal is the amount of information you can record. Having adequate room to make notes on weather conditions, lures used, time of year, and much more will give you that much more to go on in years to come. It is for this reason that many outdoorsmen find it easier to make their own journals and include all of the information they deem valuable.

Step Two: The next most important aspect of keeping a journal is to use the journal religiously. After each trip into the outdoors record your findings. Even if game or fish were not taken, record what you saw for future reference. When your quarry was successfully taken, be sure to record in great detail the events of the day and what you believe resulted in your success.

Step Three: While starting a journal may seem a little awkward at first, the true value of these records will be noticed when several seasons down the road you are able to look back at past events and nearly predict success on any given day in the field or on the stream. Techniques that you may have used with great success sin the early days of learning to hunt and fish may have become memories, but reviewing the tales of success with these methods may mean future success for you.

Compile as much information as you can in your journal to get the best results season after season. In addition to becoming a great tool for you, the journals will likely become keepsakes of the family and bring back many fond memories to those that look through the tattered pages in years to come. Keep all of this in mind when you record the events of your time outdoors and enjoy your success.
