The xx Take Mercury Music Prize
The xx is this year's winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize. The London-based trio picked up their honor during a ceremony Tuesday at Grosvenor House. Overwhelmed by the nod, The xx co-vocalist Oliver Sim told the crowd, quote, "Thank you so much, we've had the most incredible year. Everyday we've woken up to something incredible." The xx earned the Mercury Music Prize, which includes a monetary award of nearly 31-thousand-dollars, with the album "xx." The annual British honor recognizes the best album artistically by an artist in the UK or Ireland. Both the nominees and winners are determined by a group of musicians, music journalists, and others from the British and Irish music industries. The xx was one of 12 nominees, which also included Mumford And Sons' "Sigh No More," Paul Weller's "Wake Up The Nation," Biffy Clyro's "Only Revolutions," Corinne Bailey Rae's "The Sea," and Dizzee Rascal's "Tongue N' Cheek."
Following their success with the Mercury Music Prize, the members of The xx say they'd like to reinvest in their career. Singer-guitarist Romy Madley Croft tells NME.com, quote, "We made this album in a converted garage at our record label. We felt very lucky at the time to use it, but I think we'd love to make our own studio." She notes the group would like to have someplace where they can just experiment and let beat creator Jamie Smith produce the work. |
